WHILE INSTAGRAM REMOVED THE LIKES, TIKTOK STARTED COUNTING THEM
It seems strange that whilst Instagram removed the ‘Likes’ for many of us on their platform, TikTok started heavily focusing on them. In fact, the number of ‘Likes’ you receive on TikTok directly correlates to the growth of your account.
So, how does the TikTok algorithm work?
When a video is loaded, TikTok will show it to a small number of users between popular content.
The algorithm then measures how many likes, comments, shares, downloads, rewatches and the length of time the video is viewed.
The more of these engagements a TikTok video receives, the more likely it will be served to larger audiences. It appears that the ratio is one like for every ten views to encourage the algorithm to organically promote the video to more people.
Your subject matter is also crucial as to how your video will perform. This is determined based on caption keywords, sounds, hashtags, effects and content. TikTok is great at categorising user interests, so what you’re putting out there is important when it comes to potential reach.
Recognising a user’s device settings, TikTok will then establish who may be interested in your content. This is done based on posting location, language preferences and the type of device your video is being posted from.
Using audio and videos that include trending songs or sounds is a great way to reach new users. TikTok will actually showcase your videos to people who have already engaged with similar videos, i.e. the same trends and songs.
To keep the user experience positive, TikTok has introduced “not interested” feedback. Skipping through videos as well as hiding them is another way the platform determines your interests and what you don’t want to see.
